PROGRAM DETAILS :
Settle into a horse-drawn carriage and trot through the city. Pass by the 12th-century ramparts that protect the Marrakech Medina, see the city gates, called “babs” in Arabic and hear the stories about them.
If you’re taking the caleche just to get from point A to point B and save your feet—say, to Djemaa el-Fna Square or the Majorelle Gardens—then any time of day will do fine. Usually there are plenty of carriages around when you need them. (Note, however, that carriage drivers waiting at the heavily touristed Square will be tougher negotiators).
But if you’re taking a caleche primarily to enjoy the ride, to take in the Marrakech scenery and snap some photos, no time is more beautiful than sunset.
A caleche ride while the sun sinks is an unbeatable visual experience. Take the carriage around the city’s walls and find a magical, surreal setting—a reminder you’re far from home and in a place unlike anywhere in the world.
It’s also, of course, the coolest time of day, so if you’re visiting in summer, it allows you to fully enjoy the scenery without mopping sweat from your face every minute.
